The Batley Bulldogs came a cropper at the Stade Ernest Argèle on saturday afternoon, as the full time Toulouse Olympique XIII put 44 points past a lethargic looking Bulldogs side.
Toulouse Olympique – Batley Bulldogs
44 - 6
1. Match Day
4. February 2017, 15:30
Stade Ernest Argele, Blagnac
The match started brightly enough for the Bulldogs who took the lead early on through a try by Alistair Leak, which was converted by Patch Walker. But that was as good as it got for the Batley faithful after Toulouse took control of the match. Ford ran the show and proved to be a problem that the Bulldogs couldn’t solve, as he ran their defence ragged time and time again. The damage was done ultimately down the wings, especially down the left as the Toulouse attack exploited a disappointing Wayne Reittie, who was pulled inside on countless occasions, leaving it unguarded for the French team to exploit. And exploit it, they did.
At halftime the Bulldogs were down 18 – 6, but still effectively in the match. But a poor start allowed the Toulouse team in again, and it was game over.
Toulouse will be a force to reckon with in the Championships on this display. Certainly they have the potential to beat any club at home. Whether they will travel well however remains to be seen. All that remains for Batley is to lick their wounds and prepare for the home game against Halifax next week, in the hope that they cannot possibly put in another performance like they did today.
