Batley made amends for the poor showing in Toulouse with a fine display of Rugby League against Halifax at the Foxes Biscuits Stadium on Sunday afternoon. In atrocious conditions the Bulldogs were in no mood for a crisis and, especially in the first half, completely out fought and out played their opposition from the Shay.
After the defeat in France, Matt Diskin had obviously done some analysis on the abject performance, and changed the team in key positions. The omitions of Reittie, Rowe and Leak caused a few eyebrows to be raised, but it certainly sent out the correct message, and success proved him right.
Running up the slope in the first half, the Bulldogs were determined to make amends and ran Halifax ragged with tries from Smeaton, Bretherton and Chandler, all converted by the trusty boot of Walker, with no reply from the Shaymen. Chandler added a fourth try for the Dogs in the second half (conversion Southernwood) to make it 24-0, before Saltonstall scored late on for Halifax, saving them the blushes of being nilled.
